ALL HALLOW STROLL: MOUNT HOPE CEMETERY INDEPENDENCE, KANSAS -
OCTOBER 31, 2008
"You've never been in a cemetery at night have you?" I asked my wife Debbie as we walked down the tree lined road. "No this is the first time," she said as she shone the light back into the forest of tombstones. I laughed, "First time for everything," I said as I snapped another of the countless number of photo's we would take this Halloween night. "The things I do to humor you," Debbie said as she rolled her eyes and swept the light across another series of stones.
Earlier in the week I had come up with the idea of taking a walk through Mount Hope Cemetery on Halloween Night. I have always been fascinated with the large cemetery that occupies 6,969,600 square feet on the northeast side of Independence, Kansas. A mile long running north and south and a quarter of a mile wide running east and west it is divided from a commercial zone by U.S 75 highway on the west side of it and a small street on the east side separates it from Riverside park. The park is home to Ralph Mitchell Zoo, the football stadium, city tennis courts, amphitheater, city pool, miniature golf course, merry go round and picnic shelters of every shape and size. The park is the center of outdoor recreation for the city with a cemetery as it's boundary. The cemetery is the final resting place of William Mathers Inge the celebrated playwright of such works as Picnic, Bus Stop, Splendor In The Grass and the Darkness At The Top Of The Stairs. It is also the final resting place of Dr. George Tann who treated the Ingalls family of Little House On The Prairie fame for malaria in 1870. We were now in the cemetery at 11:00 on Halloween night and we were randomly taking photos.
I would direct Debbie to
shine her flash light on a certain stone and then would take a
photo. Every once in a while I would just randomly snap a photo
sometimes with flash sometimes without. I would stop every so often
to move off the road and back in among the stones. "Point your light
here," I would direct and then SNAP another photo.
As we made our way through
the darkened city of the dead we would look up once in a while at
the millions of stars overhead. The tiny pinpoints of light
reassured us and some how comforted us as the spirits surrounded us
and surround us they did. Once in a while Debbie said that the hairs
on her neck would stand up. I too would get a chill up my spine.
Whether real or imagined it sent a shiver through us on this
unusually warm Fall night.
Debbie had been commenting
on the maintenance shed and how the outside light was turning on and
off. I reassured her saying, "It's probably on a motion sensor and
some animal is triggering it." It was at this point in our walk that
the comfortable 58 degrees we had been enjoying dropped to a chilly
38 degrees. Debbie looked at me, "It's cold," she exclaimed. "Yeah I
know," I said as I began to snap a series of photo's that later,
upon processing, would reveal that we were standing in an orgy of
orbs of every shape and size. We continued on until we reached a
split in the road. At that particular point we could take the right
fork and continue on another third of mile into the cemetery or take
the left fork and circle back to the way we had come. We headed
back.
We continued on talking and
taking photos as we made our way back from whence we came. We were
less than 300 yards from where we had entered when I said, "Let's
take this path back to the rear wall and out of the cemetery. Debbie
asked, "Why this way?" I shrugged my shoulders, "I don't know," I
said, "This feels right," I indicated the path, "That don't." I
indicated the road and the direction we had been heading. We stopped
and took several more photos as we made our way towards the wall. As
we neared the east wall Debbie said, "Look a gate, and it's open." I
laughed, "Well at least we won't have to jump the wall," I joked.
"Like that would be hard, the wall is only four feet tall." She
chuckled. As we neared the gate the hair on the back of my neck
stood up, "We're being watched," I whispered. "Really? I do have a
chill", she said. I held my camera tight, "It's right behind us but
I'm not going to take a picture," I told her loudly. I suddenly spun
around and snapped a photo. Later examination of that photo would
prove that I had been correct.
Debbie and I returned home
and I started processing the 135 photo's that we took. Around 2:00am
Debbie and I could not work any longer. Bone tired we headed to bed
but the photo's we had already processed were proving to be
astounding and were revealing a large amount of Paranormal activity.
I arose at 7:00am and
continued work on the photo's. When we were done examining and
processing them so that what had once been hidden to the naked eye
could now be revealed, we were left with not only one of the most
amazing stack of 39 cemetery photos anyone has ever seen but also
with a hand full of photo's that would make even the most seasoned
ghost hunter stare in awe.
One of the first photos we
took revealed a very distinctive orb with it's own signature. As we
looked at the photos we discovered this same orb in several other
photos in different parts of the cemetery. The orb was apparently
following us around. It has a very distinctive look, colorful, with
an inner ring and a small circle inside the main sphere.
Besides the orbs we picked
up several spook lights on the ground among the stones. A spook
light is a globe of glowing light that floats, bounces and can often
be seen with the naked eye.
One of the most amazing
things we caught however seems to be a man's face within one of the
orbs. Some could argue that there are no features or that it is just
the way the orb is. As for myself I can clearly see the eyes, nose
and mouth. I won't try and convince you that the image is there.
That will be for you to decide.
Shortly after we entered the
cemetery we took a photo over in the section where William Inge is
laid to rest. Upon processing our most startling image of the entire
walk was revealed. Most ghost hunters will tell you that the Holy
Grail of Ghost Hunting is a photo of a full body apparition. After
seeing what we captured I would have to disagree. I have seen a lot
of spirit photos in my time but I have never seen a spirit emerging
from an orb until our Hallow Stroll. I will let you judge this one
for yourself.
It was a very rewarding
experience and one I hope to do again sometime in the near future.
They say that the spirits walk the Earth on Halloween looking for
redemption from the Saints of their trespasses. If this is true then
the spirits were out in force upon this final day of Harvest. I
wonder, if the orb that followed us through the cemetery was the
Spirit of Samhain making sure that we did not disturb his charges in
their wonderings on all Saints Day Eve. Next time we will have to
take a tape recorder and see if we can get the spirits to talk with
us. Anyone want to join us for a little walk next Halloween?
