Le Hunt Cemetery

Le Hunt, Kansas

The S.K.I.P.S. Family Team comprised of Co-Founders The GYPSY (me) and Debbie George and Debbie's twin sons Spencer and Nick Burt headed out from Elk City Dam on the afternoon of November 27, 2009 to locate the Le Hunt Cemetery and town site. The day was bright and clear with temps in the mid 70's. We took trails marked by the Corps of Engineers and crossing a fence line we soon found ourselves on what had once been County Road 3300. Now no more than a dirt farm road it wound along the Elk River at the foot of a bluff.

We had traveled about a mile when we heard gun shots. I stopped the group, it was deer season and the shots were coming from the far side of the bluff to which we would have to venture. There was a bend in the road up ahead and the road seemed to improve. I instructed the group to stay put while I surveyed the road ahead. Looking around the bend to the right I could not see very far down the road. As I turned to return to the group I saw a steel pole gate to my right and beyond the gate was the elusive and all but forgotten Le Hunt Cemetery.

The small cemetery must have been a lovely spot at one time. The stones are assembled under now mature cedars and deciduous trees and the plots have been planted with periwinkle or some type of ornamental creeping vines that are still in evidence. There may well be other perennial flowers that will appear next spring. The stones have been vandalized and some lay on the ground here and there.

It was fairly late in the afternoon when we reached our goal. We were on the shady side of the hill and the temperature was already beginning to drop. The weather was unseasonably mild. Because of this, and the poor condition of the road over which we must return, we inventoried the readily visible stones as quickly as possible and retreated back towards the dam!

I transcribed from the last reading of this cemetery, which was on 28 Feb 1999. This contains all existing headstones at that time.
