La Fontaine, Kansas Town With No Past And No Future In order for a town to be it must serve a purpose. Some towns developed because they were near a water source in an arid region, others because they were near a rail head, while still others because of a central location to farms and ranches. Whatever the reason for a town their must be a reason for it's existence otherwise it ceases to exist. In some instances a town had no reason for existence in the first place so it's existence is short lived and it's history fuzzy and forgotten. So it is with La Fontaine, Kansas. Founded in the late 1800's it's glory days lasted only about 50 years. By the time of the great depression most of it's 300 or so residents had moved on and away. Today the town consists of under 50 people who still stubbornly hang on to a dream that is lost. The Old School sits silent and empty refusing to give up it's last remaining wall to time and decay. What remains of the towns once thriving business district is as ragged as the sidewalk that once lined the road. The blacksmiths hammer no longer rings on the anvil and the postmaster no longer cheerfully greets residents as they stop in to mail a letter or pick up a package. Fancy tile entryways lay forgotten as the stores they once welcomed customers into. Homes where families once gathered for Sunday dinner and festive occasions now are residents for mice and spiders. La Fontaine, Kansas has no past and it's future is being claimed by the land from which, for a brief period, it once called home. -The GYPSY-
